Gist

from Latin iacēre "to lie, rest," related to iacere "to throw"

What should we do? Out of all the things we could do, which are the ones we should? For the things we can't yet do, which are the ones we should learn to do?

Fair questions, with many fair answers.

This book provides the best answer though. This book uncovers the unifying theme of your existence, of even all humanity. Thrift.

Thrift

This word has changed meanings over the years. In the 1970s, 'thrift-store' was first used, the meaning it mostly still holds today. Generally the connection to saving money or being frugal is from the 1520s. But before then, in the late 1300s, thrifti meant healthy, prosperous, and thriving. It comes from 'thrive', of the late 12th century, thriven, "to prosper, flourish, mature", pointing to even older roots related to grasping. Thrive is what life does. Before it was told to earn a living, life thrived.
